With the development of computer science and technology, information science and related interdisciplinary area, the Key Laboratory of Computational Intelligence and Chinese Information Processing of Ministry of Education (referred to as CICIP) was established and attached to Shanxi University. The laboratory integrates the research resources of School of Computer and Information Technology and the Institute of Intelligent Information Processing of Shanxi University. Preparations for the construction of the laboratory were started in 2005. The completed project was checked and accepted by the government in December, 2007. The laboratory has been officially open since February, 2008. The present director of the laboratory is Professor Jiye Liang, working in the School of Computer and Information Technology. The current academic committee is composed of 9 scientists, where 2 of them are academicians of the Chinese academy of sciences and Professor Bo Zhang is the director of academic committee.

The laboratory is mainly engaged in the fundamental theory and application research in the areas related to Intelligent Computation & Data mining, Chinese Information Processing and Intelligent Software and Intelligent Electronic Products. Concretely speaking, the research directions include rough set theory, granular computing, concept lattices, supporting vector machine,DNA computing, data mining, image processing, bioinformatics, Chinese text corpus, information retrieval and information filtering, construction of Chinese FrameNet, sentiment analysis and opinion mining, intelligent software and intelligent electronic products, etc.

The personnel of the laboratory consist of 39 persons, 9 professors, including 6 supervisors for the graduate students of the doctoral program, and 7 associate professors. Among the researchers, young and middle-aged persons constitute 80%. There are generally more than 19 Ph.D.

In recent years, the laboratory undertook some projects, such as the National High Technology Research and Development Program of China, the State Key Program of National Natural Science of China, the Special Program for Key Basic Research of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Specialized Research Fund for the Doctoral Program of Higher Education of China, etc. The laboratory has published more than 400 papers, including about 73 papers cited by Science Citation Index. Specifically, some of them are published in “Artificial Intelligence”, “IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence”, “IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering”, “Pattern Recognition”, “IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems”, “IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics”, “Information Sciences”, etc.

The laboratory’s objective is to establish a facility for planning and conducting scientific research to discover theoretical and technological innovations that directly contribute to development and prosperity of China and Shanxi Province.
